Our verdict The correct first call for almost everyone in the UK.
What it actually is
GamCare is a national charity, founded in 1997, that runs the helpline most other organisations will point you towards. Beyond the phone line it commissions and delivers structured therapy — typically CBT-based, typically eight to twelve sessions — through a network of regional partners funded via the NHS National Gambling Support Network.
What happens when you call
The helpline is staffed by trained advisers rather than volunteers, and it is genuinely 24 hours. A first call is usually twenty to forty minutes. You are not required to give your name. The adviser will talk through your situation, cover immediate safety, and can refer you directly into treatment in your area during the same call.
Where it is strongest
Availability, and the absence of any cost or eligibility barrier. There is no minimum severity threshold, no GP referral required, and affected family members can use exactly the same route. For a person sitting up at three in the morning after a loss, nothing else in the UK matches it.
Where it is weakest
The onward treatment is regionally commissioned, so quality and waiting time are not uniform. Some areas offer an assessment within a week; others run to two months. If you are told the wait is long, take the appointment anyway and use the helpline and a peer fellowship in the interim rather than waiting empty-handed.
Best for
Anyone who has not yet spoken to a professional, at any hour of the day.
What to watch for
Treatment waiting times vary substantially by region. Ask for the local partner’s current wait when you call, and ask to be put on a cancellation list.
